But, I dunno man, doing mechanical work in a tube top doesn't really make sense. Most of the costumes female characters in the show have are pretty practical and realistic and we don't see them, like, bathing for no reason much. In FMAB it feels extra silly because there isn't really much in the way of narrative reason. So often I see people say "the nakedness is symbolic of this or that emotional thing," and like, maybe, but was this really the best way to convey that? Maybe, maybe not, but it's always gonna get some side eye from me. Even in shows where the fanservice is ostensibly tied to a narrative purpose like it's there as a sendup like in Neon Genesis Evangelion it often feels like the creators are having their cake and eating it too. Especially since the show mostly succeeds just fine in conveying that Winry is supposed to be charming and attractive and Ed likes her without egregiously sexualizing her most of the time. It feels the creator is talking directly to the audience and the objectification ultimately hurts the narrative, imo. Straight up fanservice with Winry is definitely not super common in the show which almost ends up making it stick out more when it does show up, and it just kind of breaks immersion and connection with the character. With the acknowledgement that FMAB is better than most similarly targeted anime (not a high bar to clear at all!) on this front I have to agree. I do keep comparisons and context in mind though because when other popular Shonen titles like say One Piece where figures like this monstrosity are the standard the bar for "doesn't burn my eyes" is quite low yet so many won't rise to it.īut even if no one agreed your feelings are still valid as what you're comfortable with isn't up to anyone else to dictate but you. The camera also doesn't go out of it's way to linger on specific parts of her body (sans 1 Brotherhood shot I did feel was needless) like other works do so I don't feel as forced to view it through a male gaze lens but on it's own without comparing it I can see how some don't like it. So for me I find her design more tolerable as I can justify the tube top much more for a mechanic than I can chain mail bikinis. So I was very glad Arakawa didn't utilize fanservice for straight men as much as she could as a female artist.īut I can understand that when you aren't used to it on an over the top level and take into account her age Winry's portrayal at times can come off as uncomfortable. Having uncomfortably sat through many male targeted series FMA in general is one of the few that I have no real issue recommending to people who just don't wanna deal with tits in their face.
